That’s right, it’s time for log. Although I’m not sure how good these things are but they are interesting anyway. But don’t worry, this first one definitely won’t roll over your neighbors dog. It’s an iPod log dock and speakers. Now you can fool all your friends and make them wonder why you placed a log on the mantel instead of in the fireplace.
The next log invention is a transportable cabin by French architects OLGGA called Flake House. From Dezeen: “The flake house, a nomadic, road-gauged dwelling, has been conceived to clad the places wherever it lands, as to transpose them in an unusual vision. A poetic shelter, a “folie”, that merges low-tech and hi-tech. The interior finish is smooth and stripped down as to contrast with the traditional look of the external log cladding.”

The concept was to create a nomadic wooden shelter based on the idea that the structure is broken, creating two halves of unequal proportion thus creating a unqiue entry point through the middle. The logs are cut slightly uneven at the ends to simulate a broken feel, like it had been snapped. There are a few slot windows but the cabin is primarily lit from the glass walls at either end.

The interior of the cabin is completely minimal with a simple sloped ceiling. It is “a temporary refuge of micro-architectures and light habitat meeting based on the bank of the Loire and open to anybody.” Personally I don’t think it looks functional…where’s a kitchen or bathroom?
It seems the designer thinks of it more as something that travels from place to place as a temporary refuge more in the psychological sense rather than someone who is bedding down for the night. Perhaps a very intimate yoga studio. The logs look a bit hoaky and just sort of slapped on but I do like the idea of side walls completely as glass, the beautiful wood paneling for all surfaces and the idea of something breaking open in the middle to create a unique entry sequence.

For those of you that didn’t get the reference, here’s the video clip of the famous log song for your viewing and listening enjoyment. Ah, classic…
